Licensed Practical Nurse, LPN


Anatomy and Physiology: Knowledge of anatomy and physiology and the basic structure and functions of the integumentary, musculoskeletal, respiratory and circulatory systems gastrointestinal, urinary, reproductive, endocrine, and nervous systems as well as the sensory organs, fluid and electrolyte balance.

Growth & Development: An understanding of the process of growth and development across the life span.

Nursing Skills: They have the ability to perform basic nursing skills that are commonly required in the care of clients.

Nursing Profession: They can demonstrate an understanding of the role and scope of practice of the LPN. They have an understanding of the Canadian Health Care Delivery System, an understanding of the legal, ethical aspects of providing care. They can be able to employ therapeutic communication skills and the nursing process when providing holistic care to clients, function as a member of the Health Care Team and are able to assist in modifying the environment to provide for safety in terms of microbiology, immunity, the life span, and function within the legal and ethical parameters of their role.

Pharmacology/Administration of Medications: Basic concepts of pharmacological and the skills necessary to safely administer medications under certain circumstances.

Physical Assessment: Able to performing a head-to-toe physical examination.

Alterations in the Health of Adults: An understanding of common disorders affecting the body systems and the care required , will also have an understanding of pain, it’s affect on the client and appropriate basic principles of pain control to provide client comfort.

Alterations in Mental Health: Nursing in providing care to clients with alterations in mental health


Family and Community Nursing:
Understanding of families as a social system within a community.

Oncology Nursing and Palliative Care: Understanding of the field of Oncology Nursing treatment and symptom management for various forms of cancer and a understanding of the concepts related to Palliative care

Health Promotion: An understanding of the factors that affect health and wellness both on an individual and community level. Skills in time management, problem solving. They examine risk factors to health, the effect of stress and adaptation and safety issues when providing care.
